Internships
As you might expect, the main component of the Maryland Internship Program is an internship in State Government. Participants are placed in a semester-long internship in a State Government agency or legislative office. Most internships are located in Annapolis, MD; however others may be located in Baltimore, MD or other locations throughout the state. Interns are expected to work approximately 15-20 hours per week.
A common misconception about internships leads some prospective interns to believe that their routine tasks will consist mostly of making coffee and copies. In the Maryland Internship Program particpants are placed in internships where their skills and abilities are recognized. You will perform a wide variety of tasks and discover first-hand how what you learn in the classroom applies to the political process.
If you apply and are selected to participate in the program, staff will work to ensure that you are placed in an internship that closely matches your interests. Potential internship placements include:
- Office of the Governor
- Office of the Lieutenant Governor
- Office of the Attorney General
- Office of the Secretary of State
- Department of Budget and Management
- State Board of Elections
- State Department of Education
- Maryland General Assembly
