Election Judges who work in polling places are important and well paid in Maryland. Judges make voting in elections possible. They ensure that qualified voters are able to cast their vote in a trouble-free environment. Judges must be reliable, able to follow procedures, courteous and patient, and above all, possess good judgment.
You can be an election judge if you meet a few basic
requirements. You must be:
- a U.S. Citizen
- a Maryland Resident
- a Registered Voter (Click
here to register to vote in Maryland.)
- 18 Years of Age Before
the Election
- Proficient in the
English Language
Training Session for Judges
Maryland law requires all persons who desire to become an Election Judge to
attend a training session as a condition of appointment. This is necessary to
review the laws and procedures that govern elections before every election.
Compensation
In Prince George's County, Chief Judges are paid $200 for each day
served. Election Judges are paid $125 for each day served. Judges
receive $25 as compensation for attending a training course. Other counties pay
similar wages for poll workers. Judges work from 6
a.m. until about 10 p.m. and must stay at the polling precinct for the entire
day.
